I watched a video this afternoon by Tony Robbins. I know he’s not a believer in Jesus (I can tell by his occasional bad language, for instance), but many of his thoughts were based in biblical principles. The purpose of his video was to examine the traits that successful people have in common. As he spoke, I thought about why some women recover from fatigue or other health problems — and why some women don’t.
He said that it all comes down to follow-through. We can purchase “how-to” books and visit with inspiring doctors. We can read websites and stock our cupboards with healthier food. But we have to take action on what we’ve learned. We have to follow through.
Why don’t we follow through? Tony Robbins blamed it on fear. He says we have to be more afraid of what life will be like if we DON’T follow through than we are afraid of taking action.
He also talked about how often we have to hit “rock bottom” before we’re finally motivated to change.
Think about the moment you came to know Christ. You had to hit “rock bottom,” realizing your sinfulness and your utter failure to please God. You have to understand that you could please Him on your own, by any of your own good works. We can’t change anything until we first realize how sinful we are.
In my health, I really had to come to “rock bottom” before I was motivated to change. I remember the day I thought I would die. I had to decide I didn’t want to die! I wanted to watch my kids grow up. I wanted to grow old with my husband. I didn’t want to die at 35 like my great-grandmother did. I had to be more afraid of what life would be like if I didn’t follow through.
If my back hadn’t been against the wall, I would have simply had a “desire” to change — but I wouldn’t have had the motivation to do the hard things necessary for change to come.
Tony Robbins then goes one to say that we need to choose one thing to do each day that requires us to follow through. Start one small project. Take one small action. See how much your health improves from these tiny steps, ways in which you actually did what you said what you would do.
He concludes by saying that you’ll either DO what you said you’d do, or you’ll tell everyone a story about why no method works for you and it’s not your fault you don’t feel well. In other words, you’ll either take personal responsibility, or you’ll shift the blame.
It takes guts to change!
(And thankfully, the Holy Spirit is there to help you, if you’ll but make the decision to change.)
Great video, Tony Robbins! Thank you!
P.S. What changes are you working on? If you want to share in the comments, please do!
